Meet Ms Shim Bao Ling, the Centre Director Bringing Oodles Math to Towner Road
If you are a parent in Kallang, Whampoa or Bendemeer looking for math tuition close to home, there is a new centre to know about. Oodles Math @ Towner opens at Blk 102 Towner Road, a short walk from Boon Keng MRT, and it is led by someone who came to this work as a parent first: Centre Director and Math Coach, Ms Shim Bao Ling.
A parent first, a Centre Director second
Before she took on Oodles Math and Yue Xue Le at Towner, Ms Shim was a mother sending her own children to Yue Xue Le at Downtown East. At home, she tutored them with onSponge assessment books, the very materials Oodles Math is the Sole Certified Math Tuition Partner of since 2010. She saw what happened when learning was supported properly, in the centre and at the kitchen table, and she decided she wanted to build that experience for other families.
That route into the work shapes how the Towner centre feels. Ms Shim talks to parents the way a parent would. She knows the worry that comes with a child who understands the lesson on Tuesday and loses the thread by Friday, and the quiet panic of a Primary 5 report book. She also knows the families who are looking for something different: children who have lost their motivation, children who make careless mistakes under pressure, and children who learn best when they feel safe enough to ask a question out loud.
Her philosophy: confidence and joy come first
Ask Ms Shim what she believes about learning and the answer arrives quickly. In her words:
“I believe that learning begins with confidence and joy.”
Ms Shim Bao Ling, Centre Director and Math Coach, Oodles Math @ TownerHer thinking is simple and, for a parent, very reassuring. A child who feels safe, encouraged and motivated is willing to explore. From that willingness comes understanding, and from understanding comes accuracy and fluency over time. She puts it in four words that guide the centre: Confidence. Joy. Understanding. Excellence.
It is a philosophy that lines up closely with how Oodles Math teaches. We help children think clearly rather than rush, we treat mistakes as part of learning, and we celebrate the effort that leads to progress. Ms Shim brings that spirit to every lesson she teaches at Towner.
What you will notice when you walk in

The centre has been planned around children, not just lessons. Ms Shim has spent weeks thinking about the small things that make a child want to come back: a snack corner with a “fuel your focus” message for the end of a long school day, handwritten encouragement cards from teachers to students, and a wall where children can put up what they love about learning and what they are proud of. The classrooms carry the Oodles Math robots, and a wall of encouragement posters runs along the staircase.
Behind all of it is a straightforward idea. When a child walks into a place that feels warm and cheerful, the maths that follows feels a lot less intimidating.
How lessons work at Oodles Math @ Towner
Oodles Math follows the MOE syllabus, so your child learns the same topics in the same order as school, taught so that it finally makes sense. Our single method runs from kindergarten to Secondary 4, which means a child can stay with one familiar approach as they grow.
ACEit: reading a word problem one sentence at a time
Many children say, “I understand the words, but I don’t know how to solve it.” ACEit is our reading method for exactly that moment. Children learn to take a problem sentence by sentence and turn it into a picture or model they can work with, so they are reading to understand, not just reading to finish.
Proprietary strategies for the questions that matter
The marks that decide a grade often sit in Paper 2 problem sums. We have sorted those questions into types and matched each one to a clear strategy, so a child who gets stuck reaches for a tool instead of freezing. Students who learn our strategies typically gain 15 to 20 marks on Paper 2, which is around one AL grade, and across Oodles Math the vast majority of our students improve by at least one grade.
One journey from K2 to Secondary 4
Our early years Math Literacy programme builds number sense with real objects and hands-on play. +thinkingMath follows the primary syllabus topic by topic and adds the reading skills and strategies behind Paper 2. PaceUP bridges the jump into secondary math and carries students through to O-Levels. Because the method stays the same, there is no need to relearn a new system at each stage.

Math and Chinese under one roof
Math and Chinese, under one roof at Towner Road
Oodles Math and Yue Xue Le 越学乐 now share the same centre.
Our Towner Road centre is home to both Oodles Math and Yue Xue Le, our Chinese enrichment and tuition programme for preschool and primary students. That means your child can build confidence in math and in Chinese in one place, with one trip, and with teachers who share the same belief that learning works best when it makes sense and is enjoyable.
What this means for your family:
- Two subjects at one centre, so fewer trips and an easier weekly routine
- A cross-subject discount when your child learns both math and Chinese with us [add offer details here]
- Small classes in both programmes, so every child gets noticed
- Siblings can learn different subjects at the same time and place
Come by for a trial class in either subject and see how it feels.
